For the first time in the history of Iraq, The Minister of Communications oversees the signing ceremony for a project contract enabling international transit bandwidth through Dark Fiber technology.
IQ Networks Company, the official partner of the ministry for internet services, signed a strategic contract with the global company GBI, the ministry’s partner in the Gulf submarine cable project, to enable international transit bandwidth across Iraq. For the first time, the service of direct connection between two points (Dark Fiber) has been provided.
The Minister, Al-Yasiri, pointed out the strategic importance of Iraq becoming a key corridor linking the north with the south, and the east with the west. She emphasized opening the doors for all global companies to pass their international telecommunications through Iraqi territory.
Minister Al-Yasiri added that they were determined to support this significant project with all available resources despite challenges. She noted that the efforts paid off, as Iraq’s international transit capacity was raised for the first time in months to 1,600 terabytes through cost-effective policies, technical solutions, and legal frameworks.
Moreover, Minister Al-Yasiri announced the ministry’s approval of several agreements with global and regional companies such as Turk Telekom, Batelco, Ooredoo, STC, Omantel, Zain, Etisalat UAE, Breeze, and others. These agreements include projects such as deploying submarine cables, equipping a secondary station at Al-Faw, and creating additional transit networks.
